NiSource Charitable Foundation

In support of its aspiration to become North America's Premier Regulated Energy Company, Columbia Gas of Ohio's parent company, NiSource, has established the NiSource Charitable Foundation, with a mission to help create strong and sustainable communities where NiSource employees and customers live and work. In close collaboration with NiSource employees and community partners, the Foundation seeks opportunities to provide funding and encourage volunteer support for non-profit organizations in the areas of:

  • Community Vitality and Development
  • Environmental and Energy Sustainability
  • Learning and Science Education
  • Public Safety and Human Services

NiSource Charitable Foundation Grant Giving Guidelines and Grant Review Processes 

Note: Grant Applications are due on April 1 for the spring evaluation and September 1 for the fall evaluation. If you miss the deadline, your application will be submitted into the next evaluation period.

Who is Eligible

Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations or other non-profit organizations as determined by the Internal Revenue Service which have a focus in one or more of the defined community focus areas:

  • Education
  • Environment
  • Economic Development
  • Human Services
  • Public Safety
  • Have a direct impact in the markets served by NiSource companies.
  • Serve the community without discrimination based on race, color, age, religion, national or ethnic origin and physical disability

Who is Not Eligible

  • Individuals
  • Religious organizations other than universities or colleges
  • Political causes, candidates, organizations or campaigns
  • Organizations which discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national or ethnic origin or disability
  • Sports sponsorships
  • Organizations requesting goodwill advertising for fundraising benefits and program books
  • Evaluating Grant Requests

The NiSource Charitable Foundation uses a consistent method to evaluate requests focusing on the following areas: quality, strategic potential, community impact/public benefit and management.

Grant requests will be reviewed by the Foundation Board of Trustees semi-annually, generally in May and October of each year. The NiSource Charitable Foundation reserves the right to decline any request, change guidelines without notice or reduce any gift amounts in accordance with corporate budgets, program guidelines or conflict of interest with NiSource.
