What is an e-Bill?

The "e-Bill" is a new option for Columbia Gas of Ohio customers to receive their gas bill. Developed in partnership with Checkfree Corporation, the e-Bill is an electronic version of the paper bill that you receive today, but is accessible over the internet by using an internet browser. The e-Bill resides on Checkfree's website, and contains links to our home page containing additional information such as "Gaslines" (our monthly customer publication), other bill inserts, customer service information, and safety and conservation messages. All information, including bill messages specific to you, will continue to appear on the e-Bill just as it will on the paper bill.

If I sign up for an e-Bill, will I continue to receive a paper bill?

At this time you will no longer receive a paper bill once you have begun using the e-Bill. However, in the future, we hope to be able to offer you the option to choose the bill format that would work best for you.

What if I do not want to use the e-Bill?

No one is being forced to use the e-Bill. The e-Bill is intended to be an alternative to the traditional paper bill for those customers who wish to use it and find it more convenient than their existing paper bill. Under no circumstance will any customer be required to use this bill receipt method. In addition, customers who elect to use the e-Bill, may discontinue and return to the traditional paper bill at any time.

Is there a cost to receive my bill via e-Bill?

No. As with bills we mail to you today, Columbia Gas of Ohio bears the cost of rendering this bill.

Are other utilities offering the e-Bill to their customers?

A: Columbia Gas of Ohio is the first utility in Ohio to offer the e-Bill. In the near future it is likely that others will follow suit.

If I receive my bill using the e-Bill how can I pay my bill?

A: You may pay your bill just as you do today or you may choose to subscribe to Checkfree's e-Bill payment service. Currently several payment options are available to you:

  • Zipcheck (automatic withdrawal from your checking account)
  • Pay by mail
  • Pay at a walkup location near you

What if I forget to look at my bill?

Checkfree will send you an e-mail reminder if you have not looked at a new e-Bill four days after it is rendered at their site.

Will the service be available to all customers?

This service is available to the majority of our commercial CHOICE® customers. Internet access through a browser, which supports Secured Sockets Connections and an e-mail address, are additional requirements. Although customers may be able to access their bills through public terminals at libraries, schools, or senior centers, they will need their own e-mail address so that Checkfree can notify them after four days if their bill has gone unopened.

Placing information about myself or my financial accounts on the Internet makes me nervous. How will my transactions be kept confidential and safe from others?

Transactions to and from Checkfree's web page will be encrypted. Essentially this means that any information sent between your browser and Checkfree is scrambled using state-of-the-art equipment while it is being communicated. This is a standard protective measure being used by the majority of businesses today that are performing financial transactions on the Internet.
