Columbia Gas of Ohio to begin pipeline improvement project

Wednesday, January 15, 2014
Columbus, OH -- Columbia Gas of Ohio will begin two major pipeline improvement projects near Mooberry Street in Columbus during the first quarter of 2014. The company will replace more than nine miles of natural gas mainline and 650 customer service lines in the neighborhood.

The Mooberry Street & Miller Avenue project covers an area south of Mooberry Street, north of Livingston Avenue, west of Kimball Place, and east of 18th Street. The Mooberry Street & Champion project covers an area south of Mooberry Street, north of Livingston Avenue, east of Lockbourne Road, and west of Rhoades Avenue. (Please see the accompanying fact sheet for a map and list of streets.) Customers benefitting from this work will receive a notification letter prior to construction.

The $3.9 million project will replace existing steel pipe with specially designed plastic pipe. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

Columbia Gas of Ohio will discuss the project at the Livingston Avenue Area commission meeting at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, January, 21, at the St. John’s Learning Center, 640 S. Ohio Avenue. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information and answer questions from residents in the project area.

The construction work requires a temporary interruption of natural gas service. Columbia Gas will make personal contact with customers prior to shutting off service and to schedule service restoration.

Customers with indoor meters will have them moved outside of the home. An outdoor meter eliminates the risk of shut off due to access issues, and provides first responders with easy access to the meter during an emergency. This is a safety enhancement and a convenience to our customers. Any meter move out and customer service line replacement will be done at no additional cost to the customer. Columbia Gas of Ohio is spending nearly $2 billion over 25 years to improve its more than 20,000 mile underground pipeline system.

As a reminder, all Columbia employees and contractors carry identification cards bearing their name, photograph and identification number and will be happy to show it.
