Odor of gas in Wellston, Goldsboro, Glen Roy, Coalton

Wednesday, December 12, 2018

Due to a supplier issue on Tuesday, Columbia Gas customers in Wellston, Goldsboro, Glen Roy and Coalton may have noticed an unusually strong odor in natural gas supplied to their area. As of Wednesday afternoon, levels of mercaptan have returned to normal.

For safety, the chemical mercaptan is added to natural gas to give it a distinctive "rotten egg" odor. When too much mercaptan is present, the odor can be very strong and unpleasant. Residents still may encounter pockets of the heavy odor that were noticed Tuesday but this will wear off as the day goes on.

If you smell a strong gas odor, please go to a safe place and call us at 1-800-344-4077. We treat all odor calls as a priority. A service technician will be dispatched to perform a safety inspection inside your home.

Thank you to the first responders in Wellston and surrounding Jackson County, for their assistance during this situation.

We also want to sincerely thank the impacted residents for their patience and apologize for any disruption this may have caused.
