We're using GPS technology in your neighborhood

GPS technology is used for more than driving directions; it’s helping us improve our records, emergency response and maintenance of our service lines. We use GPS units to measure the location of our natural gas lines within inches. Understanding the exact location of underground facilities prevents damages typically caused by unsafe digging practices.

Before we begin our GPS work, we’ll provide you with a notice of our planned work to help make sure you know why we’re in the neighborhood. This work will not require digging or entry into homes or businesses, and your natural gas service will not be affected by the project. The GPS equipment may be mounted on a tripod or on a wheel, with a GPS receiver at the top. Our employee or contractor will use a keypad to enter data on located gas lines.

Our employees or contractors may need to return over a few days to complete this GPS work. If we’ve recently worked in your neighborhood for a natural gas line replacement project, you’ll see this GPS work after the project is complete.

Hi, I'm JD and I'm working on the GPS project for Columbia Gas. I'm using a GPS receiver to record the location of all gas facilities. I may connect this device to your meter or other spots. It tells my receiver where the gas lines are. Then I'll trace the path of all of our lines along the street and up to your home. We'll put a tag on your door before we start work in your neighborhood. I carry a Columbia Gas ID badge and I'll be happy to show it to you. The GPS program will help us provide the safe and reliable service you depend on.
