Residential Gas FAQ

Is natural gas available at my residence?

To find out if natural gas is available in your area, submit a Natural Gas Availability Request and one of our representatives will respond to your request within 2 business days. Or, give us a call at 800-440-6111 and one of our company representatives will guide you through the process.

If natural gas is not currently available at my residence, is it possible to have Columbia Gas extend a main line to serve me? Will I be charged for the extension? How much?

Please contact our New Business Team at 800-440-6111. A representative will evaluate your specific site to determine main line availability and provide information on the main line extension process.

Who installs the line from the main in the street to my residence?

Columbia Gas of Ohio installs and owns the service line. Please contact our New Business Team at 800-440-6111 to schedule installation of your service line.

I am concerned about the appearance of the meter setting; what are your requirements about the location of the meter?

A representative will be happy to explain the details, including acceptable locations, sizes, screening, protection, etc. You may also refer to the Natural Gas Meter Placement Sheet for details.

We currently have natural gas at our residence and are planning to add new gas equipment. Will our current meter capacity be sufficient when we connect our new equipment?

Please contact our New Business Team at 800-440-6111 for information about your specific needs. To assist our representative in providing accurate and timely information, please have the following information available:

  • Existing equipment you are running on natural gas.
  • The British Thermal Units (BTU) load of each piece of existing equipment, this number should be found on the equipment’s label.
  • The BTU load of the new piece(s) of equipment.

In addition, if you are planning to relocate your service line and meter because of an addition to the existing building, you will need to submit site plans with the load information.

To assist you in gathering this information, please complete the Natural Gas Add Load Form prior to calling. Your Columbia Gas of Ohio representative will then be able to determine if the service and meter are large enough to handle the increase.

How do I convert between British Thermal Units (BTUs), cubic feet (CCFs), MCFs and Therms?

  • 1 Cubic Foot has approximately 1,020 BTUs.
  • There are 100 Cubic Feet per CCF or about 102,000 BTUs.
