Memorable summer experiences are building future leaders in Appalachia

Friday, April 21, 2017

Fun, engaging summer experiences create lasting friendships and foster skill sets for high school students as they pursue their dreams of attending college and becoming leaders in their communities. Columbia Cares about the prosperity of our communities and we know that support of engaging programs for students is critical to building our future generation of leaders.

The iBELIEVE Summer Workshop is providing these opportunities for students and giving them the tools needed to develop real world leadership skills that will help prepare for the classrooms and careers of tomorrow. Columbia Gas of Ohio is proud to sponsor the sessions at Muskingum University, thanks to a grant from the NiSource Foundation.

"Columbia Cares about keeping Ohio communities strong through education and economic development,” said our president, Dan Creekmur. “By helping students build the skills they need for success, iBELIEVE is building a brighter future for our communities.”

According to the Appalachian Regional Commission, college attendance in Appalachia lags far behind the rest of the country. Adults in Appalachia are about 25% less likely to have a college degree than those elsewhere, and the gap is growing.

The iBELIEVE Summer Workshop is tackling that challenge head-on by offering these summer programs to build a network of young leaders throughout southeastern Ohio. We are so appreciative of iBELIEVE’s efforts in the Appalachian community and we are humble to receive this year’s iGIVE award for our support of this life-changing program.
