Suspicious call? Protect yourself

Monday, July 17, 2017

Be alert! Suspicious callers, claiming to be Columbia Gas of Ohio, are contacting customers with a pre-recorded message requesting a return call and advising the recipient to call back with a recent billing statement. These calls are NOT from us, nor are they affiliated with us in any way.

Be alert and stay safe. Follow these simple tips to protect yourself and your personal information if you suspect you’ve been targeted by a scammer:

  • Call us first – If you’re not sure about the legitimacy of any phone call, e-mail, program, offer or person claiming to be affiliated with Columbia Gas of Ohio, please call our Customer Care Center at 1-800-344-4077.
  • Guard your personal information – Never give personal information, including Social Security numbers and banking information, to unconfirmed sources. We will only ask for a Social Security number when a customer is applying for new service or to verify a customer’s identity.
  • Be familiar with payment options – We will never ask for a pre-paid debit card or money gram as a payment method. Instead, familiarize yourself with our convenient payment options so you can spot a potential scammer.

If someone visits your home:

  • Ask to see ID – Ask them for identification before allowing them into your home. Our employees and contractors carry photo ID badges and will gladly show you upon request.
  • Use caution with cash – Our employees do not collect cash payments or deliver cash refunds or rebates to customers at home. We also suggest not to send cash through the mail to prevent loss or theft.
